ULTRASOUND DURING PREGNANCY

a pregnant woman having her ultrasound

Ultrasound is a prenatal test that is offered to most pregnant women. This pregnancy scan uses sound waves to generate the picture of the baby inside the womb.

Ultrasound is statutory for the expecting mothers as it is the only diagnostic modality to measure the development of the fetus.

Women with low-risk, complication-free pregnancies will typically have at least two ultrasound, while older moms and those with complications will usually have more. There are many reasons ultrasounds in general are necessary during pregnancy, depending on the trimester, including:

  • Confirming your estimated due date

  • Looking at your baby's heartbeat

  • Making sure the pregnancy isn't ectopic (i.e. in the Fallopian tubes) and is in the uterus

  • Confirming the number of babies in utero

  • Making sure baby is developing properly and at the appropriate pace

  • Checking and measuring baby's major organs

  • Measuring the size of your baby

  • Checking amniotic fluid levels

  • Ruling out any birth defects

  • Giving parents a look at baby and providing reassurance that all is going as it should be in the pregnancy.

Transabdominal Ultrasound:

The expecting mother is asked to lay on her on the examination table and her belly is covered with gel. This gel supports the sound waves to travel easily, in order to get a better picture of the baby.

Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS ):

This ultrasound is conducted through the vaginal opening. The expecting mother lies on her back on the examination table and a thin transducer is inserted into the vagina to study the condition of the birth canal.

Doppler Ultrasound:

This kind of Ultrasound is meant to review the blood flow in the baby in case it is detected that fetus is not growing normally.

3D Ultrasound:

The Ultrasound is used to take numerous pictures at a time. It creates a 3D image .

4D Ultrasound:

The Ultrasound is like the 3D ultrasound but additionally, it shows the movement of the baby in form of a video.

Results of Ultrasound

In case of most of the women, the Ultrasound detects the normal growth of the baby. If the results are normal the mother should make sure that they attend all prenatal check-up to keep a strict watch on the development of baby inside.

But in certain cases, a pregnancy ultrasound may detect that the baby requires special care. In such cases, treatments are suggested by the doctor to ensure normal birth and delivery of the child.

But whatever are the results it is always suggested to consult the doctor about the best ways to take care of the baby inside the womb.
